BEAUMONT - The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office recognized five people this morning who played a role in saving the life of a deputy who was shot in January.

Ken Justice will remain as EMS director/fire coordinator, county manager Paul Christian and public works superintendent A. J. Griffis accepted responsibility for how sale of a surplus piece of equipment was made without bids and Christian and commissioners reconciled a conflict among themselves during a wide ranging meeting Tuesday night.

Retired EMS assistant chief John McFarland was revered within the FDNY, and today he is being laid to rest after dying from a brain tumor linked to his service after the attacks of 9/11.
